Certain principles guide everything I do in marketing ...
They serve as the engine that drives all my decisions.
Combined, these “rules” create a manifesto of sorts.
Since we’re a couple weeks into the new year (and likely a few new marketing initiatives), I figure now is an ideal time to share these with you.
After all, they have the potential to make your marketing much more profitable.
So print this and keep it close for when you're working on your next marketing campaign.
1. Write the way you talk. If you wouldn’t say something in the exact same manner during a face-to-face conversation, keep it out of your marketing.
2. Stop “marketing.” The most effective marketing often doesn’t look like marketing.
3. Deliver value. Educate people with information that, when applied, gives them the opportunity to quickly see measurable results.
4. Rely on data rather than opinions. Opinions in marketing are useless because, by definition, they are based on lack of knowledge. Data, however, allows you to make informed decisions.
5. Think beyond your beliefs. You are not your prospects. Never assume they have the same preferences as you.
6. Provide reasons. If you want people to take your desired action, give them reasons. Or, even better, add some incentives.
7. Remind them what they’ll miss. You tap powerful emotions when you tell people what they’ll lose out on if they don’t take action on your offer.
8. Be willing to test (small). One attempt at outreach is not marketing -- it’s hoping.
9. Understand you will fail. Rarely will you see the results you want the first time you try anything new in marketing. So be prepared to gather data, adjust and try again.
10. Adapt fast. When you’re part of a small company, you have a big advantage over industry behemoths. You can pivot and quickly react to opportunities.
11. Personalize the experience. Whenever possible, customize your messaging based on people’s characteristics.
12. Keep adding touchpoints. Competition for attention is fierce. So spread your messaging over multiple channels.
13. Do it again. When something you try works, repeat the process and pursue your desired result with relentless focus.
So there you go …
You're welcome to share these with anyone involved in making your marketing more profitable.
