On October 23, 2001, Steve Jobs stepped on stage at Apple headquarters to share a new product announcement.
Within just minutes, he said something that forever changed the landscape of the music and computer industry.
It was a mere 5 words.
A slogan of sorts ...
“1,000 songs in your pocket”
If you were into music and you heard these words, you immediately wanted an iPod.
And, again, this desire developed as a result of just 5 words.
The marketing magic behind this phrase helped turn Apple into America’s first trillion-dollar company.
So why were these words so powerful? And how can you replicate a bit of this marketing magic in your business?
For the answer, we must look at who this phrase focuses on …
Without a doubt, it’s the customer.
There’s no reference to how many years Apple has been in business, their engineers’ education or even the product name.
Because none of this matters.
Back then, you didn’t even need to know the iPod’s features or even what it looked like to realize you wanted one.
Jobs simply studied Apple’s potential customers and asked:
What problem does this solve and how can I say it in a way that everyone understands?
You must ask this same question when marketing your product or service.
The key is to focus your answer on something that brings the biggest benefit to your clients/customers.
Then make this messaging the focal point of your marketing.
No jargon. No buzzwords.
Just simple language.
Got it?
